Jobs in Construction
There are a wide variety of jobs available in the construction industry ranging from office jobs to working directly on the building site.
An Architect is responsible for drawing up the plans for the development. Depending on the size of the project there may be more then one architect on the payroll. Architects may also be required to submit the plans to a local government agency to get planning permission and will also have to ensure that their plans adhere to all local environmental laws. Some housing developments require the same plan to be used repeatedly for many separate houses; so it is essential that an architect’s plans are accurate.
A Project Manager manages all construction workers on site. They often need to arrange meetings with designers and contractors to discuss such issues as cost analysis and staffing needs. They may be required to compile budgets and progress reports in order to figure out the remaining estimate costs. On larger developments project managers are helped by one or more Assistant Project Managers who will help out in the day-to day-tasks a project manager needs to do. Assistant project managers will also be expected to cover for the project manager if he or she is absent.
A Surveyor studies the site of a proposed development to establish if it is feasible to build the proposed building at that location. A surveyor will need to take measurements of the property and carry out various tests to ensure that the land is capable of supporting a structure. They will also establish property boundary lines and advise the property owner on their findings.
A Quality Control Manager works in the creation of quality construction materials. Some large construction companies have the facilities required to make their own materials and a quality control manager must ensure that items that are going to be used in the building process are able to do the task they were designed for. They will need to have a great deal of experience in the building trade to be able to ensure that the products that leave their facility are of the highest quality.
